Client

The client is a European digital health company developing a connected pelvic floor training system for users with pelvic floor weakness and urinary incontinence. The product combines two sensor-equipped device models with iOS and Android apps, Bluetooth connectivity, real-time biofeedback, training games, cloud analytics, subscriptions, firmware updates, and access to healthcare specialists. Because effectiveness depends on correct positioning, accurate sensor readings, and immediate app responses, even minor issues could undermine training results and user trust.

    Challenge

    Testing a connected health ecosystem

The product combined two versions of a sensor-equipped pelvic floor training device with iOS and Android apps, Bluetooth connectivity, cloud analytics, subscriptions, training games, firmware updates, and healthcare consultations. QA had to test not only individual features but the complete journey from physical movement and sensor input to real-time mobile feedback and stored progress data.

    Ensuring accurate real-time biofeedback

The application interpreted pressure, contraction strength, and movement data to determine whether users were performing exercises correctly. Inaccurate readings or delayed responses could affect calibration, game difficulty, progress tracking, and the quality of training guidance. Testing therefore had to cover different strength levels, incorrect techniques, device positions, and user conditions.

Preventing setup errors and device misuse

The initial onboarding did not explain the device clearly enough. Some users positioned it incorrectly, reversed the sensors, skipped important instructions, or removed part of the external Bluetooth component. These mistakes could prevent connection and calibration, produce unreliable readings, damage the device, and lead users to abandon or return the product.

Supporting frequent releases with limited QA foundations

The existing test documentation was incomplete, acceptance criteria were often unclear, and major regression cycles included up to 300 scenarios. At the same time, the team maintained a biweekly release schedule across two mobile platforms, multiple device configurations, localized versions, subscription tiers, and continuously expanding functionality.

Preparing an advanced device for launch

While the project was ongoing, the client introduced a premium device version that supported training while walking, moving, and performing additional exercises. QA had to validate new sensors, body positions, movement patterns, premium access rules, firmware behavior, and compatibility while preserving stable functionality for users of the original model.

    Meeting medical device requirements

The product was also undergoing regulatory assessment for European and US markets (FDA, CE, GDPR). The team needed reliable test evidence covering device behavior, measurement accuracy, sensitive data handling, software functionality, and the consistency of sensor information across the connected system.

    Solutions

Our QA team joined the project at the requirements stage and built a structured testing process around the mobile apps, connected devices, cloud services, and user-facing training experience. They refined acceptance criteria, expanded the Xray repository with hundreds of test cases, organized supporting documentation in Notion, and established repeatable functional and regression workflows for biweekly releases.

Testing was performed with physical devices across different user profiles, strength levels, device positions, movement patterns, mobile platforms, and subscription tiers. The team also worked directly with users through Intercom, turning recurring setup and training problems into onboarding improvements, new regression scenarios, and product changes.

    • Product contribution: Helped design and roll out a new game that trained users to maintain consistent contraction strength through visual feedback.
    • End-to-end device testing: Validated the complete flow from sensor input and Bluetooth communication to app feedback, cloud analytics, progress tracking, and stored user data.
    • Real-time biofeedback validation: Checked pressure, contraction strength, movement, calibration, scoring, and exercise guidance across correct and incorrect training techniques.
    • Onboarding redesign: Introduced detailed, non-skippable instructions covering device positioning, the external Bluetooth component, calibration, and the first training session.
    • Cross-platform coverage: Tested iOS and Android apps across multiple devices, operating system versions, and five localized product versions.
    • Analytics and firmware testing: Verified sensor information in Mixpanel and tested remote configurations, feature flags, and firmware updates through Firebase.
    • Advanced device launch support: Covered the premium model from requirements to release, including new sensors, movement-based exercises, subscriptions, and model-specific functionality.
    • User-driven improvements: Reproduced real customer issues, supported users directly, and converted recurring problems into product fixes and test coverage.
    • Regulatory support: Prepared test evidence and evaluated device behavior, measurement accuracy, data flows, and software functionality for European and US regulatory processes.

    Technologies

We picked a toolset that could support the full connected-device testing workflow, from test management and cross-platform mobile coverage to sensor data validation, firmware updates, analytics, and direct user support. Each technology helped the QA team maintain visibility across the device, mobile apps, cloud services, and release process.
